The Open Source revolution has proven to be a new paradigm capable of producing world-class technology. It has created dedicated communities of contributing developers and power users. However, the open source projects must now attract mainstream users to continue growth and establish a long-term position in technology markets.(See open source crossing the chasm column on right.)

The Open Source community is well supported in the development phase by companies such as SourceForge. When the time comes to go to market, however, the additional components that enhance success, documentation, application assistance, knowledge base and technical support, do not have a ready infrastructure. SQI is offering its Client Interface Environment to the Open Source community to fill that gap.

openCIE is the free hosting of the Client Interface Environment (CIE) specifically for open source projects. CIE is an OnDemand, world-class infrastructure for client support and knowledge transfer. The environment is an integration and enhancement of open source technologies.

All CIE functionality, capabilities, processes and know-how described on this site are included in openCIE. Browse the site. If you think openCIE is right for your open source project request your own site today by clicking the Create your openCIE Site button at the top of the first column.

Complete Solution

openCIE is more than just access to application technology. openCIE is an integrated suite of application technologies, configurations, user interfaces, strategies, processes and know-how focused on getting an open source project across the Solutions-Gap chasm and into the mainstream users.

SQI University presents the strategies, processes and know-how. Incident Manger presents the user support infrastructure and FireUp Knowledge Applications presents the knowledge management infrastructure.

Giving Back

SQI Inc. is providing openCIE as a contribution back to the open source community and as a tool to help open source projects create a revenue stream.

Geoffrey Moore's "Crossing the Chasm: Marketing and Selling Disruptive Products to Mainstream Customers" defines the major impediment to the long term success of high-tech products as the fundamental change in users over time.

OS Adoption Cycle

This is true because the product's growth can only be sustained by attracting mainstream users. Thus, when all the innovators and visionaries that can be attracted are already users, the edge of the Chasm is reach. At that point growth is dependent on attracting and satisfying mainstream users that are less-technical pragmatists and only interested in complete solutions. Most high-tech products find it a significant, and occasionally daunting, challenge to build the additional components that fit the products to a less technologically sophisticated user.

All successful open source projects are now at the chasm. The success of open source to date has been driven by the innovators and visionaries - the Power Users. But, for the future to be bright, open source projects must attract mainstream users - Solution Seekers - a task that few projects are equipped to meet.

openCIE provides the technologies, processes and strategies for open source projects to address the needs of the Solution Seekers. We look forward to working together and launching the next phase of explosive growth - the adoption of open source technologies by mainstream America.
